Berndes Care and Use Guidelines

This Guide is taken from the guide that Berndes themselves publish (with a bit of the rough translation from German ironed out!).

Care and Cleaning instructions for non-stick cookware

Berndes use non-stick cooking surfaces which have been tested and proved to be exceptionally durable and long lasting.

  • Before first use, wash the pan thoroughly and rub in a little cooking oil
  • Do not put heat under the cookware when empty
  • To avoid damage from burning cooking oil residues (vaporises at 200° C / 392° F), pour some cold water into the pot or pan after use
  • Avoid using sharp utensils or objects. Wooden or plastic utensils are recommended. Scratches do not reduce the good functioning of the cookware in any way.
  • To clean, use hot water, washing up liquid and a soft sponge
  • After washing in a dishwasher and before its next use, rub the pots and pans with a few drops of cooking oil. NB Discolouration of the pan bottoms is harmless aluminium oxidation
  • Cast iron handles can be used in the oven. However, they get hot so always use potholders, serving helpers or our thermo handles
  • Plastic fittings can withstand heat up to 160° C (320° F)
  • Protect wooden handles in the oven by wrapping them in aluminium foil. However, washing in the dishwasher can damage the wooden handles so is not recommended
  • In spite of extensive quality checks, sometimes a product is delivered with a less than the desired quality. Please send the substandard product back

Care and Cleaning of stainless steel cookware

Berndes cookware has a specially designed, energy saving, thick base.. Once the correct temperature has been reached (the base will hold the heat well), reduce the heat to low and continue cooking. The thick base has been designed to conduct heat evenly, so reducing cooking time and saving energy.

  • Suitable for all cookers including ceramic and halogen hobs but not suitable for induction hobs
  • Before first use, remove all tags and labels, and then wash your Berndes pan in hot soapy water. Please rinse and dry well.
  • For best results when cooking, avoid using high heat, as it causes food to burn, and could discolour the pan exterior. Use a radiant or gas ring of a slightly smaller diameter than your pan's. Don't let the gas flame come up the sides of your pan
  • To clean, use a soft sponge and your usual detergent. Do not use metal scourers/steel wool as these can scratch the surface. To prevent food residue which may cause sticking during cooking, we recommend the regular use of a proprietary stainless steel cleaner. This should be applied with a cloth or sponge and then rinsed off thoroughly in warm water
  • If you notice dull patches or discolouration on the pan surface, this is due to minerals in the water. To remove the marks, rub the affected areas with half a lemon. Alternatively, use a mixture of 9 parts water and 1 part vinegar.
  • Cleaning instructions for non-stick stainless steel cookware: as above, but clean the interior ONLY with hot soapy water. Do not use a stainless steel cleaner on the non-stick interior surface
